Headlight restoration for motorbikes: does it work?

Updated 8 October 2026 by Canggu Bike

Short answer

Yes. Cloudy, yellowed headlight lenses can be restored by wet sanding with progressively finer paper, polishing and sealing with a UV protection. Results last longer with a good UV sealant. If the lens is cracked or has moisture inside, replace it instead.

Why lenses go cloudy

The plastic lens oxidises under UV and heat, and dust and rain wear the factory coating. The lens turns yellow or hazy and the light gets weaker.

DIY steps

  1. Mask the surrounding paint with tape.
  2. Wet sand the lens with progressively finer paper, from coarse to very fine.
  3. Rinse and dry between grades.
  4. Polish the lens until it is clear.
  5. Apply a UV-protective sealant or clear coat.
  6. Remove the tape and check the light.

What can go wrong

  • Sanding too aggressively and scratching deeply.
  • Skipping the UV seal, so the haze returns within months.
  • Getting product on the paint.

When to replace

If the lens is cracked, has moisture inside or the reflector is damaged, replace the headlight.
