Ceramic coating vs wax vs sealant for motorbikes
Wax gives a warm shine for weeks to a few months, a paint sealant protects for about three to six months, and a ceramic coating can protect for a year or more. Wax is cheapest and quickest, sealant is the middle option, and ceramic is the best long-term protection for a bike you keep.
The three options side by side
| Wax | Sealant | Ceramic coating | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protection lasts | weeks to 2 or 3 months | about 3 to 6 months | a year or more |
| Look | warm, deep gloss | sharp, slick gloss | hard, glassy gloss |
| Effort and time | low, an hour or two | low to medium | high: prep, coating, cure |
| Upkeep | reapply often | reapply twice a year | wash well, no reapply for a long time |

Wax
A natural or synthetic wax adds gloss and a thin layer of protection. It is the quickest and cheapest option, and it looks great, but it wears off with every wash and with Bali's heat. It suits riders who like to look after their bike and do not mind reapplying.
Paint sealant
A synthetic sealant bonds to the paint and lasts longer than wax. It gives a slick, bright finish and handles heat and rain better. It is a good middle option, and part of our Showroom Detail.
Ceramic coating
A ceramic coating forms a hard layer on the paint. It lasts much longer, resists UV and road film, and makes washing easier. It needs thorough preparation, costs more and takes a day or two. See what it costs in Bali.
Which is right for you?
- Selling soon: a Signature Detail with a hand wax is enough.
- Keeping the bike a year or more: ceramic coating.
- Between the two: a Showroom Detail with a sealant.
- Matte paint: none of the above. See our matte paint guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is ceramic coating better than wax?
For long-term protection, yes. It lasts much longer and resists sun and salt better. Wax is cheaper and quicker, but it needs reapplying often.
Can I put wax over a ceramic coating?
It is usually not needed. A ceramic coating gives its own gloss and protection, and a pH-neutral wash is enough for upkeep.
How long does a paint sealant last?
About three to six months, depending on conditions and how often the bike is washed.
