How often should you wash your motorbike in Bali?
Short answer
In Bali, wash your motorbike every one to two weeks, and sooner if you ride near the coast. After heavy rain, mud or sandy tracks, rinse it the same day. Use a pH-neutral shampoo and microfibre, keep water away from the intake and electrics, and lubricate the chain if your bike has one.
Why Bali is hard on a bike
- Salt air near the coast speeds up corrosion on bolts, chains and exhausts.
- Dust and sand grind into paint and moving parts.
- Strong sun fades paint and dries out plastics, rubber and seats.
- Rain and mud in the wet season leave road film and grit.
A simple schedule
| Situation | Wash or rinse |
|---|---|
| Normal use in Canggu | Every 1 to 2 weeks |
| Parked or ridden near the sea | Weekly |
| After heavy rain or muddy tracks | Rinse the same day |
| Before a long trip | Wash and check the chain and tyres |
| Deep clean and protection | Every 3 to 6 months (detail) |
How to wash a bike properly
- Let a hot engine and exhaust cool down. Wash in the shade.
- Rinse first to lift sand and dust.
- Use a pH-neutral shampoo and a clean microfibre mitt. Never use dish soap, which strips wax.
- Keep water away from the air intake, switches, ignition and bearings. Do not blast the chain or wheel bearings with a jet.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry with microfibre.
- Lubricate the chain on a manual bike after it is dry.
Mistakes to avoid
- Hard brushes or a dry cloth on dusty paint.
- Pressure washing at close range.
- Washing in direct sun, which leaves water spots.
- Harsh degreasers on painted or matte parts.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I wash my scooter in Bali?
Every one to two weeks for normal use, weekly near the sea, and a quick rinse after heavy rain or mud.
Is it bad to wash a motorbike too often?
Not if you wash gently with a pH-neutral shampoo and microfibre. Dirt left on the bike does more harm than a careful wash.
Can I use a pressure washer on my motorbike?
Use it sparingly and from a distance. Keep it away from the chain, bearings, electrics and the air intake.
