How long does a ceramic coating last on a motorbike?
Manufacturers often claim two to five years for a ceramic coating. In Bali's strong sun, salt air and frequent washing, expect the lower end: one to three years with good products, proper preparation and a careful wash routine. A cheap coating on unprepared paint can fail within months.

Coating durability depends on the product, the thickness, the preparation of the paint and how the bike is used and washed. Claims of several years come from ideal conditions. Daily sun, salt air, heavy rain and rough washing shorten that.
What shortens the life of a coating
- Coating over dirty, swirled or oxidised paint with no preparation.
- Harsh degreasers, strong detergents and automatic brush washes.
- Washing in direct sun, which leaves spots and wears the surface.
- Leaving salt, bird droppings and fuel on the paint.
- A thin, entry-level product.
How to make it last
- Wash by hand with a pH-neutral shampoo and microfibre.
- Rinse salt and dust off early, ideally the same day after a beach ride.
- Avoid washing for the first few days after coating, as advised at handover.
- Use a maintenance spray or topper if your installer recommends it.
- Park in shade or under a breathable cover.
How to tell if it is still working
Water should bead and roll off the paint, and dirt should wash away easily. If water spreads flat and the bike gets dirty fast, the coating is wearing out and may need a maintenance treatment.
