How to clean a motorcycle helmet and when to replace it
Remove the liner and cheek pads if they are removable, hand wash them in lukewarm water with mild soap, wipe the shell and visor with a soft cloth, and air dry away from direct heat. Avoid solvents and hot dryers. Replace a helmet after an impact or when the manufacturer advises.
The shell and visor
- Wipe the shell with a damp microfibre cloth and mild soap.
- Soak a cloth on the visor to loosen bugs and dirt, then wipe gently.
- Dry with a clean cloth. Do not use paper or abrasive pads on the visor.
The liner and pads
- Remove the liner and cheek pads if the manufacturer allows it.
- Hand wash in lukewarm water with mild soap.
- Rinse thoroughly and squeeze gently.
- Air dry fully before putting them back.
Smell and humidity
In Bali's heat and humidity, helmets get damp and smell. Air the helmet after every ride, and do not leave it in a closed bag.
What to avoid
- Solvents, petrol or strong cleaners, which can damage the shell and foam.
- Hot dryers, which can deform the liner.
- Stickers and paint that the manufacturer does not approve.
When to replace it
Replace a helmet after any hard impact, if it is cracked or damaged, or when the manufacturer advises. Check the guidance for your helmet.
